The general mission of Common Cents is stated as "advancing social justice and equal opportunity by emboldening a generation of young people to become community activists and good citizens during their youth. The majority of Common Cents" efforts are directed towards the Penny Harvest.
The Penny Harvest is a community service program that has now spread to the majority of New York City. Most schools in New York use the Penny Harvest as a year-long way of promoting community involvement in their students. However, the Penny Harvest differs from the typical community project in that it puts much of the control in the hands of the students, some who are as young as kindergartners. By showing that adults can have faith in the students, the Penny Harvest fosters a sense of confidence and self-reliance within its participants.
