Boys Harbor Math and Science Upward Bound Program located 1330 Fifth Ave New York, NY. It is a federally funded non-profit after school program designed to combat poverty by aiding low-income underprivileged first generation college students in successfully obtaining admission into college or university to pursue post-secondary degrees of education. This particular initiative seeks to strengthen the math and science education of participating students and assist them in demonstrating competency in math and science. It also is designed to encourage students to pursue post-secondary degrees in math and science.
More specifically, the Math/Science Upward Bound Program offers its services to high school students in upper Manhattan and some sections of the Bronx. In order to participate in the program and receive subsidies, federal guidelines dictate that students must qualify as coming from low-income families and be possible first generation college graduates.
Math/Science Upward Bound Participants receive free tutorial services in college prep courses as well as the SAT and ACT. Tutoring is emphasized in the subjects of math and science but courses are also given in English and Computer Literacy, in addition to other extra-curricular activities.
Students also visit college campuses in New York and out-of-state as well as receive assistance in applying to college and financial aid. Participants receive personal, academic, and career counseling. All students attend study skills sessions on time management, note-taking, test taking, ACT preparation, etc. The program also offers the advice and wisdom of guest speakers who visit the center and speak with the students about their careers and respective fields.
