The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a public-benefit corporation that was chartered by New York State in 1965. Since that time, the corporation has become one of the world's most efficient transit systems. Indeed, statistics indicate that four out of every five rush-hour commuters to New York City's central business district utilize public transportation services provided by the MTA. Incredibly, New York's MTA transportation network is the largest in North America, with 343 rail/subway lines and bus routes, and approximately 7.7 million passengers a week. In 2000, the MTA launched a five year capital program to continue the work of previous programs in restoring and advancing the reliability and efficacy of the transportation system. Aside from these goals, the MTA is also working on ensuring that New York City is home to the cleanest bus fleet in the world. Our project also operates in accordance with the MTA's desire to provide transportation services that are environmentally efficient, as well as accessible for those with disabilities.
