PHOTO CONTEST RULES 2004-2005
(Shading -- if/when added -- will indicate a change from previous rules)
INTRODUCTION
1. Each Club member may submit no more than ten (10) entries in a contest,
and shall be limited to a maximum of four (4) in any one category: black/white
prints (including digital), color prints (including digital), and color
slides.
(digital prints processed by the maker will no longer be regarded as a
separate category).
1. A particular print or slide may be entered in only one Morningside
Gardens contest.
2. No winning entry may be resubmitted in a different format (e.g. a winning
slide may not be resubmitted as a print).
3. All prints must be no smaller than 5 x 7 inches and must be mounted
on stiff cardboard measuring at least 8 x 10 inches, with a border of
at least one inch.
JUDGING CATEGORIES
TIER A: Includes all members who have previously been awarded a first
or second place in any three different Morningside Gardens Camera Club
contests. Club members who are in Tier A must enter the "My Best
of the Year" contest annually in order to remain in Tier A.
TIER B: Includes all Club members not in Tier A who have received at
least one first, second or honorable mention award in a Morningside Gardens
Camera Club contest.
TIER C: Includes all members who as yet have won no awards
JUDGING
1. Entries will be judged by three judges, one of whom will be a Club
member selected by the contest coordinator(s). One of the other two judges,
designated the Reporting Judge, will critique each entry and report its
score.
2. Judges will be expected to evaluate, and the Reporting judge to comment
on the following photographic qualities:
| TECHNIQUE: |
exposure - lighting - focus - framing |
| COMPOSITION: |
center of interest - leading lines - balance - color |
| IMPACT: |
interest - communication - mood or feeling |
3. Scoring will be on a one (1) to nine (9) point spread, nine being
the highest score. Thus, the maximum total score is 27, the sum of the
three judges rating if each scored it a nine. Each judge shall submit
a score independently. Only after the total has been determined shall
the judges discuss their individual evaluations of an entry. In case the
Club member judge has submitted an entry, he/she will not judge his/her
entry. Instead, the average of the scores of the other two judges added
to the sum of their scores will be the final score for that entry.
4. The judges will review all entries in each Tier that receive a score
of 21 or higher and will identify a first and second place winner The
remaining entries in each Tier scoring 21 or higher will receive honorable
mention. Should scores be tied for first or second place, the judges will
review entries (but not change the scores) to determine the winner.
AWARDS
Awards will be made to all winners in all categories except that when
a member wins more than one award in a category, only the highest award
will be made.
A green ribbon will be presented on the occasion of a member's first
participation.
ENTRY PROCEDURES
Entries must be submitted to the Contest Coordinator(s) by the date specified
on the contest schedule. Entries should be contained in envelopes or bags
with your name and the number of entries in each category clearly printed
on the container.
PRINTS: Members must fill out an entry label and attach it to the back
of the print. DO NOT put your name on the label or the print. The coordinator
will assign an ID number to each print. Indicate the top of your print
with an arrow on the back at the upper right corner.
SLIDES: Holding the slide the way you want it shown on the screen, place
a dot in the lower left hand corner (diagram at left below). After placing
the dot, turn the slide upside down and print the title at the top and
your name at the bottom (diagram at right below).
KEEP THESE RULES HANDY. THEY APPLY TO ALL CONTESTS.
